Frequently asked questions
Life Navigation Lab has been created by Mel Lambert, an Irish woman living and working on Kaurna Land in South Australia. Mel is a qualified coach certified by the International Coaching Federation and behavioural coach with Tiny Habits® Academy. Mel has been designing and delivering peer-to-peer coaching and career/life transition programs since 2014. The best way to get to know her is to set up a time for a chat!
We have tried to keep what we offer simple, flexible and affordable so you can find something that works for you, whatever your time or financial constraints. If you are in mid-career or between jobs then the Career Transition Lab is ideal for you as it allows you to explore the options before you with both peer and 1:1 coaching support. If you’re in late career and starting to think about leaving the workforce, you may find the Life Beyond Work program to be a better fit as this focuses specifically on decision-making about whether to stay or leave the workforce and what might come next.
We get it – it can feel a bit vulnerable to open up in front of others. Yes, we offer 1:1 coaching instead of group programs if you prefer. This can also be useful if you just have one question or challenge you’re facing and feel that one session may be all you need. Having said that, the peer connections and encouragement you can access to Life Navigation Lab are often one of the greatest value adds. Joining the Career Transition Lab gives you the best of both worlds!
While you can access 1:1 coaching through Life Navigation Lab, the heart of the Lab is small peer groups. Times of career uncertainty, decision and transition can be lonely and you can feel like no-one else ‘gets it’. When you join one of our programs you’ll get access to a group of peers who are in a time of change and uncertainty themselves. Even if you sign up for 1:1 coaching we’ll still give you access to our ‘office hours’ once a month where you can troubleshoot in a peer group. The peer-to-peer inspiration, support and encouragement this offers are key elements of the value and impact we offer.
When you join one of our programs, you’ll be asked to agree to our simple peer group norms (be kind; be curious; listen with passion; respect the stories). We aim to create an environment in which diverse individuals can interact in a positive and affirming way, so ask members to be respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences. We ask people when they join any group events or programs in Life Navigation Lab that they do so as a participant with a sense of give and take, offering support and encouragement to their peers as much as they seek to receive it from others.
Periods of transition can be unpredictable, but they also don’t last forever! When you sign up for a program or course, you get access to 6 months of ‘office hours’ support which allows you time to explore, reflect, connect, experiment and check back in on your career decision-making journey. Most people have a shorter period where they are actively engaged, and a longer time when they touch base again, as and when they need it. We also have a few peer-led online and in-person networks which operate informally around Life Navigation Lab which you are welcome to join if they align with your interests (or you may want to start one!)
Here at Life Navigation Lab we want to make sure that career decision-making support is available to people from all walks of life, backgrounds and circumstances. In fact, often it’s when life gets tough that this support is most critical! We offer a sliding fee scale so that you can choose to pay what you can afford. However, if affordability is still an issue get in touch as we can occasionally offer more heavily subsidised places.
